That's where HEART (Homeless Empowerment through Art Renewal and Training) in the Park can help. HEART in the Park is a summertime recreational and training activity to engage adults experiencing homelessness, especially those who have been chronically homeless. Over a ten-week period, local artist and gallery owner Catherine Weaver will teach art skills to these adults, using mixed medium techniques combined with poetry. She will also share her experiences with homelessness and domestic violence so the participants will see they too can overcome their crisis, and art can help.
Not only will the program participants learn how to create one-of-a-kind paintings, abstracts or collages, but also they will discover ways to safely and appropriately channel and express pent up emotions and begin moving toward empowerment, permanent housing and self-sufficiency.
Beginning Friday, June 12, 2015, this series of ten weekly workshops will be conducted in Williams Park in downtown St. Petersburg, a location frequented by people experiencing homelessness. Following the conclusion of the workshop series in the park, the participants and volunteers will work together to produce an art exhibition, called “Art from the HEART,” to be held in early October at a downtown gallery or studio.
Because this is a new and unfunded project, the class size will be limited to ten homeless adults. They will be

Volunteers are needed to help set up the tables, easels, art supplies, and refreshments, and help clean the area at the end of each 90-minute class. Donations of art and cleaning supplies as well as packaged, healthy snacks and beverages will also be accepted and appreciated.
